Psalm 34:8 Taste and see that the LORD is good. Oh, the joys of those who take refuge in him!
It’s a strange invitation that the Psalmist extends to the reader but essentially it’s a modern day dare. It’s a dare to the individual so there can’t be any “I will if you will” life rafts! It’s a gamble, a step into the unknown.
When I read this verse I’m filled with a sense of God’s biding, a call to deeper water from shallow lands. But if you’re like me something causes us to pause? In our humanity we are conditioned to sense danger in the unknown, we don’t like to swim in waters where we can’t see the bottom, something may lurk beneath.
But have I lost my sense of adventure when it comes to my spiritual journey, when God dares me to jump? Going deeper may cause loss as God strips away the old man, it’s a measuring of the cost, how much am I willing to pay and will God accept VISA or maybe an IOU?
The reality is, that though often the cost to a closer walk with God is high, the dare is scary but the reward is always worth it, even if it means coming out with less, it actually just looks that way… the promise and reality is that it is so much more.
“…the joy for those who take a chance in him!”
